Klopp: 'Liverpool Outshines Previous 7-0 Win Against Man Utd'

According to The Mirror, Raphael Varane's outstanding performance in the 0-0 draw against Liverpool has restored confidence in the French star at Manchester United.

Previously, there were rumors in the English media about a deep conflict between Varane and coach Erik ten Hag after the Dutch tactician consistently benched the former Real Madrid player to give way to Harry Maguire.

There were even reports suggesting that Manchester United would be willing to let the 30-year-old defender leave as a free agent in the upcoming summer transfer window if his form did not improve. However, after the high-class display against Liverpool, Varane has made Ten Hag reconsider his decision.

In the match at Anfield on December 17, Liverpool dominated possession with 60%, had four corner kicks, and took 18 shots with eight on target. On the other hand, Manchester United had 40% possession, three corner kicks, and eight shots with four on target. The teams were evenly matched until Cody Gakpo's goal in the 43rd minute tilted the game in favor of the home side. United conceded two more goals early in the second half, leading to a 0-3 defeat.

In the rematch at Anfield on December 17, Liverpool had 69% possession, won 12 corners, and took 34 shots with eight on target. In contrast, Manchester United did not win any corners and only had one shot on target from Alisson Becker.

Virgil van Dijk's header, Ibrahima Konate's turning shot, and Trent Alexander-Arnold's long-range effort hitting the post were among Liverpool's best chances. Klopp admitted that he had anticipated such a scenario before the match and believed that the game would only open up if Liverpool scored.

"If Liverpool plays like that, it's tough for Manchester United to push too far forward, and they defend very resolutely," said the German coach. "A goal would change many things, and they would be a bit more open, accepting more risks. But nothing changed, and they were determined to defend."

Liverpool's failure to score from 34 shots is a record for the club since the 2003-2004 Premier League season. It is also their worst performance since Manchester United failed to score despite attempting 38 shots against Burnley in October 2016.

Klopp expressed concern as Liverpool enters a challenging period with back-to-back matches at Anfield against West Ham in the League Cup quarter-finals on December 20 and Arsenal in the 18th round of the Premier League on December 23. The year 2023 will end with an away game against Burnley on December 26.

After the match against Manchester United, Liverpool suffered another blow as Ryan Gravenberch joined the injury list, which already included Alexis Mac Allister, Joel Matip, Stefan Bajcetic, Andy Robertson, Diogo Jota, and Thiago. Klopp emphasized the importance of overcoming the upcoming period with as many players available as possible.
